Frequently Asked Questions
Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, NUS

Question 1. What do students learn in Environmental Engineering?

Answer: Environmental engineering is a multidisciplinary field, and students learn not only engineering principles, but also microbiology, chemistry and ecology. Solving environmental problems requires a fundamental understanding of the natural processes that influence the problem, as well as of the engineering approaches that can be used to resolve the problems.

Question 3. What is the difference between Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering

Answer: There is much in common (as well as significant differences) in the Environmental Engineering and the Chemical Engineering programs; the two programs share a common first year. From Year 2, Environmental Engineering students begin to embark on more environmental science and engineering subjects. Both the education and job markets for graduates in Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering are somewhat different, but there is overlap in the job markets for the two disciplines. While some Chemical Engineering graduates are employed in environment-related areas, there are many other jobs that require a mix of skills and in-depth knowledge, which are better provided in the Environmental Engineering program.

Question 4. Is Physics important in Environmental Engineering?

Answer: Physics is important in all engineering programs. However, in the Environmental Engineering program, there is also heavy emphasis in microbiology and chemistry....wheeww!!...

Question 5. How well recognised is the environmental engineering program at NUS?

Answer: The B.Eng. (Environmental Engineering) degree at the NUS has received accreditation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK.

Question 6. Where do environmental engineering graduates find employment?

Answer: Environmental engineers may be employed in private industry, consulting firms, or government agencies. The graduate employment survey of year 2002’s graduating class showed the following: Oil-related/petrochemical Industries (4%), Semiconductor/Electronic industry (12%), Chemical industry (4%), Environmental Technology/SHE Technology (4%), Government/Statutory Boards (36%), Further Education (20%), Others (20%)...government sh*t...dont wan!!!..

Question 7. What is the demand for environmental engineers in the local market?

Answer: Environmental engineering is a relatively new and rapidly growing field. Environmental Technology has been identified by the National Science and Technology Board as one of the market areas for research and development in Singapore.

Question 8. How much does an environmental engineer earn?

Answer: The graduate employment survey of Year 2002’s graduating class showed that the majority of our graduates received a gross monthly salary of between $2500 and $3000. A quarter of the employed graduates received a monthly salary of between $3000 and $3500.
